How Can Students Learn to Distinguish Misinformation From Real News?

Teachers have a new media-literacy tool they can use to help high school students steer clear of misinformation.

The free online game, called NewsFeed Defenders, was released Thursday, as mid-term election campaigns heat up. It invites students to pretend that they’re moderating an online news-aggregation site called Newsably, and have to figure out what’s real news and what’s not.Image result for newsfeed defenders

They’re under pressure to build readership, while protecting the integrity and reputation of their news operation. To navigate that minefield, students have to figure out which news sources to trust and how to evaluate viral rumors; how to spot bias in stories; and how to verify information and images.

NewsFeed Defenders was created by iCivics, which was founded by retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and provides free civics-instruction resources to teachers, and the Annenberg Public Policy Center, which studies Americans’ knowledge of politics and media. The game is available on the web, or as an app through iTunes and Google Play. It comes with discussion prompts, classroom activity ideas and mini-lessons.

iCivics has created 20 instructional games for students. It has worked with Annenberg in the past on four earlier civics-related games: “Executive Command,” “Branches of Power, “Court Quest,” and “Law Craft”. iCivics also has created lesson plans for teachers. Annenberg developed FactCheck.org 15 years ago to help voters check the accuracy of online information and politicians’ assertions. Another of its projects, Annenberg Classroom, provides a curriculum focused on the teaching of the Constitution for middle and high school students.

While teachers can use NewsFeed Defenders in media literacy instruction with students, its intended audience isn’t restricted to students. iCivics and Annenberg created the game to help both adults and young people get savvy about differentiating information from its wily cousins, misinformation, and disinformation.

Players can choose to focus on one of three topics areas in their pretend newsfeeds: health and wellness, sports and entertainment, or student life. As they “work” to curate the news items flowing in from their members, they confront challenges about how to handle them.

How about that viral post about arrests at polling places, for instance? Should they dig more deeply into that to see if it’s for real? Which stories should get high visibility, and which ones should take less-prominent spots on their site? How do they figure out whether a “feature story” is really just an advertisement in disguise?

“When our citizens are no longer able to discern the truth in media, we undermine one of the cornerstone institutions of our democracy,” iCivics Executive Director Louise Dubé said in a statement.

The new game can play a role in classroom instruction aimed at helping students learn to “question and investigate potentially manipulated content” and use evidence to support their conclusions about what’s credible in their own social media feeds, she said.

Family Engagement Bill AB 2878 Signed Into Law by the Governor

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT BILL AB 2878 SIGNED INTO LAW BY GOVERNOR

SACRAMENTO – Assembly Bill 2878, sponsored by California State PTA and co-authored by Assemblymember Rocky Chavez and Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, has been signed into law by Governor Brown.

Signed yesterday, this legislation will add research-based family engagement guidance and practice into the California Education Code. It will provide schools, districts and parents access to research-based best practices for family engagement and involvement.

Research demonstrates that when schools practice authentic family engagement, absenteeism is reduced, dropout rates decrease and student achievement and graduation rates go up.

“California State PTA is extremely proud to sponsor this important bill that supports meaningful and effective family engagement, “ said California State PTA President Dianna MacDonald.

“We are ecstatic that AB 2878 has been signed into law, and look forward to seeing the students of California benefit from this thoughtful approach to family engagement,” said MacDonald.

Family engagement is a cost-effective way to increase student achievement. According to research, schools would need to increase spending by more than $1,000 more per pupil to gain the same results as effective family engagement.

PTA sees this as a simple and powerful next step to ensuring we build positive long term relationships between families and schools especially with our next generation parents and families and those underserved.  Read more about AB 2878 here.

HELP STRENGTHEN FAMILY ENGAGEMENT IN SCHOOLS

California State PTA is proud to sponsor Assembly Bill 2878 (Chávez), which has passed through the Senate and the Assembly. We need your help to encourage Governor Brown to sign this measure into law!

This measure would simply add family engagement to Priority #3 (Parental Involvement) of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). LCFF Priority 3 calls for all school entities to provide active and meaningful participation and training for all families.

AB 2878 (Chávez) seeks to use research-based guidelines to define what constitutes authentic family engagement within the Education Code.

As school districts implement their own parent involvement activities and programs, AB 2878 (Chávez) would suggest practices such as: outreach in multiple languages, targeting families that are underrepresented in the school and/or school district and include program strategies that are diverse and innovative to reflect a modern student population.

Did you know that students can be members of PTAs or PTSAs and serve on your executive board? Learn more about involving students here.

When reaching out to students, keep in mind these seven key points to share, provided by student representatives on our California State PTA Board of Managers.

  • To gain leadership experience that you’ll use for the rest of your life
  • So that you get to decide how your school can serve and affect you
  • To receive access to scholarships
  • To enjoy benefits and discounts
  • To share your ideas and let your voice be heard
  • To positively impact your community through service (most schools require community service hours in order to graduate)
  • To make a difference for your generation and the generations to come

Welcome Back!

Welcome to all new and returning students and their families, to staff and to community members.  We are very excited to meet new friends, and say hello to familiar faces on campus.  We are committed to working closely with the staff, students and the community members in order to provide the most positive experience for the members of the Eagle Rock High School community.

I have been a part of the LAUSD family since 1999, when my oldest son entered Kindergarten at Mt. Washington Elementary.  I joined the PTA as a board member in 2000, and have been a PTA member, volunteer and parent leader since then.  This is my third year with Eagle Rock Jr./Sr. High PTSA, with my youngest daughter entering 9th grade this year.  All of my three children attended Mt. Washington Elementary PTA, then moved on to different middle schools and high schools: Renaissance Arts Academy, Arroyo Seco Museum Science Magnet , Ramon C. Cortines Visual and Performing Arts High School and of course, Eagle Rock Jr./Sr. High School.

Having experienced different schools, and being involved with over 100 PTA and PTSA schools within Los Angeles Unified School District, I am proud to say that I have seen many successful accomplishments and achievements through the perseverance, hard work and dedication of staff, parents, students and community leaders.  I am now witnessing the same at Eagle Rock High, everyone striving to provide the best possible educational experience within our school community.

Our team consists of dedicated volunteers with different and varying expertise, specialties, knowledge and skills that they bring to the PTSA.   To find out who we are and our purpose and mission, visit the About page.

Please feel free to contact us anytime with questions, concerns, information or just to say hello.  We would love to hear from each and everyone of you!

Anvi Kevany, President
